X Launches Standalone XChat App on iOS

X (formerly Twitter) has officially rolled out its long-awaited standalone XChat app for iPhone and iPad users as of April 24, 2026. The move marks the latest step in Elon Musk’s vision to transform X from a social media platform into a full-featured “everything app”, complete with private, ad-free communication that rivals WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram.

From Basic DMs to Fully Encrypted “Chat” , Then to a Standalone App

X replaced its aging Direct Messages with a rebuilt system simply called Chat. That initial rollout brought end-to-end encryption, file sharing, disappearing messages, message editing, screenshot blocking with notifications, and a promise of “no ads, no tracking, total privacy.” Voice notes returned shortly after, and Grok AI integration was added.

Early feedback was mixed; some users reported lag and loading issues during the transition, but the upgraded messaging layer quickly became the default for millions.

Now, just five months later, X has taken the next logical step: spinning Chat into its own lightweight, focused app called XChat. Available immediately on the Apple App Store, the standalone version keeps every privacy and feature upgrade from the integrated Chat while offering a cleaner, distraction-free experience separate from your X timeline.

What XChat Actually Offers

According to the App Store listing and X’s announcements, here’s what users get right now:

  • Full end-to-end encryption: Messages are private by default; even X can’t read them.
  • No ads or tracking: The app is built for conversation, not data harvesting.
  • Disappearing/vanishing messages: edit/delete, and screenshot protection (with alerts).
  • File sharing: voice notes, and support for audio/video calls.
  • Group chats: large participant limits and shareable invite links.
  • 4-digit passcode lock: for added security.
  • Seamless sign-in: with your existing X account, no new profile needed.
  • Grok integration: Long-press any message inside XChat to query the AI.
The app is designed to feel native on iOS, with a minimalist interface focused purely on messaging. Android support is expected “soon,” though no exact date has been confirmed.

How to Get XChat Right Now

  • Open the App Store on your iPhone or iPad.
  • Search for “XChat” (App ID: 6760873038).
  • Download the free 175+ MB app.
  • Sign in with your X account, and your existing chats and contacts should carry over.

The Bigger Picture

With Communities being phased out in favor of expanded group chats inside XChat, and payments, video, and other features already in the works, X is clearly betting that secure, private messaging will be a major growth driver. Whether it becomes the default chat app for hundreds of millions of X users remains to be seen, but the foundation is now in place.

If you’re already on X, the new XChat app is worth checking out today. Private, encrypted, and finally living in its own sleek home, this is the “new X chat” rollout everyone’s been waiting for.
